MEET THE CO-CHAIRS!
We are so proud to share that our chapter was recognized as the Farwest Regional 1st Place Award Winner for Exemplary Social Action Programming for the 2024–2025 sorority year, a distinction that reflects our chapter’s commitment to civic engagement, advocacy, and service.
Rooted in the legacy of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated—from the historic Women’s Suffrage March of 1913 to present-day advocacy—political awareness and involvement remain foundational to our mission. At the chapter level, we actively partner with community organizations, churches, college campuses, and senior living communities to promote voter education, voter registration, and informed civic participation, particularly among populations whose voices are often underrepresented.
Take a look at the initiatives below and learn more about how our award-winning Social Action efforts continue to create meaningful and lasting impact.

VOTER OUTREACH: TASTE OF SOUL
Our chapter proudly participated in voter education and registration efforts at the Taste of Soul Festival, one of the largest free, one-day street and food festivals in California. Held annually along historic Crenshaw Boulevard, Taste of Soul draws tens of thousands of attendees from across Los Angeles and surrounding communities, creating a unique opportunity to engage families, young adults, seniors, and first-time voters in a space rooted in culture, community, and celebration. Leveraging this high-impact setting allowed our Social Action efforts to reach a broad and diverse population in an accessible and welcoming environment.
This voter registration initiative was a collaborative effort among Social Action Committees from multiple chapters across Los Angeles County including:
- Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter
- Inglewood Alumnae Chapter
- Rolling Hills–Palos Verdes Alumnae Chapter
- Long Beach Alumnae Chapter
Together, members worked side-by-side to educate community members on voter eligibility, registration deadlines, and the importance of civic participation. By uniting across chapters, we were able to strengthen our presence & demonstrate the power of collective service and advocacy.
Meeting people where they are, in a trusted and familiar community space, reinforces our commitment to ensuring that every voice is informed, empowered, and encouraged to participate in the democratic process.
RESPECT MY CROWN
Our chapter hosted a special screening of Respect My Crown: The Rise of African American Women in California Politics at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in partnership with the CA Black Women Collective. The documentary highlights the powerful stories, leadership journeys, and political impact of African American women across California, shedding light on the challenges they have faced and the barriers they continue to break in public service and policy leadership.
The screening welcomed more than 75 attendees, including chapter members, community guests, and participants from our Educational Development programs. Delta Academy and Delta GEMS participants had the opportunity to witness firsthand how Black women leaders have shaped policy, uplifted communities, and created pathways for future generations.
The afternoon concluded with a dynamic question-and-answer session featuring special guest speakers, followed by fellowship and conversation. Hosting the Respect My Crown screening reflects our committee’s commitment to political education, leadership development, and meaningful dialogue. By creating space for learning, reflection, and connection, this event underscored the vital role Black women continue to play in shaping California’s political landscape and advancing equity for our communities.
CHAT & CHEW: CIVIC TALK
The Social Action Committee hosted Chat & Chew events designed to create open, accessible conversations around civic engagement, voting, and ballot measures in welcoming community settings.
- Series 1: Partnered with the California State University, Dominguez Hills Election forum to host conversations on a college campus. This provided an opportunity to engage young voters, first-time voters, and emerging leaders in meaningful dialogue during a critical election period.
- Series 2: Partnered with a senior living facility in the South Bay area to focus on older adult populations. This session emphasized recognizing the importance of reaching seniors who bring lived experience, historical perspective, and consistent civic participation to the democratic process.
Chat & Chew reflects our commitment to meeting people where they are!
RISE UP & VOTE
Through the Rise Up & Vote initiative, the Social Action Committee conducted grassroots voter outreach through door-to-door canvassing and direct engagement within the community. This personalized approach allowed members to connect one-on-one with residents, provide voter registration assistance, answer questions, and share essential voting information—bringing the process directly to the home and reducing barriers to participation.
The committee also partnered with local churches and participated in community events throughout the City of Carson, including collaborations alongside our Soror and Mayor of Carson – Lula Davis-Holmes. Together, these efforts emphasized the importance of informed civic participation and ensured community members had the knowledge and resources needed to understand their rights and make confident, informed decisions at the polls.
DREW LEAGUE FAIR VOTERS
The Social Action Committee participated in a Community Day hosted by the Drew League Foundation, where members organized a voter registration booth to engage residents and promote civic participation. Community members were provided with voter registration assistance, election information, and resources designed to help them prepare to cast informed ballots in upcoming elections.
In addition to voter outreach, the committee raised awareness and garnered community support for the Shirley Chisholm Congressional Gold Medal Act and Statue Act, honoring the legacy of the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and her lasting impact on American democracy. This outreach reinforced the importance of participation, empowerment, and honoring those who paved the way for expanded civic inclusion.
GARDEN OF PRAISE VOTERS
The Social Action Committee partnered with Garden of Praise Church to host a voter registration booth focused on empowering community members through civic participation. By collaborating with a trusted faith-based organization, the committee provided convenient access to voter registration resources in a familiar and welcoming environment.
This outreach effort reinforced the importance of meeting community members where they are and ensuring they have the information and support needed to make their voices heard. Through education, engagement, and service, the partnership reflected our continued commitment to strengthening democracy and promoting informed participation at the local level.
